LEGO my …wedding cake?

legocake.jpgLoved LEGO as a kid? You can also love LEGO as a bride. Yup, someone’s finally done it -- made a wedding cake out of LEGO.

I was prompted to finally build a LEGO wedding cake mainly because I got a surprisingly high number of inquiries about LEGO wedding-themed items during the past year.
Really!?!?!?? At first I thought it sounded ridiculous. But as I kept reading, I thought, “Wow, this is pretty cool.”
The top tier (the smallest one), has a bride and groom mini-figure display and does not deconstruct... it would be a single piece that would be kept by the newlyweds.
Even though my guy would probably WANT to deconstruct the figure if I opted for a plastic cake, he COULDN’T. Hehehehe. Really, though, that’s an original keepsake to have. And it solves the problem of freezing a piece for your first year anniversary!
The idea is that the bottom two tiers of the cake are comprised of 124 slices of LEGO cake. These slices, while obviously not edible, could be distributed to guests of the bride and groom as souvenirs... everyone would get their own little LEGO memento of the happy day.
Hey, that eliminates the need to give party favours to the guests! Perfect. Although, it does create a problem of no edible cake. “Let them eat LEGO cake?”

One Year Old Wedding Cake: Yum, Yum

weddingcake.jpgIsn’t it romantic? Saving a slice -- or the entire top tier -- of your wedding cake, freezing it, then eating it on your first anniversary while reminiscing with your guy? Yup, it sounds delicious. But I’ve heard the horror stories. Oh yes, I have. How the cake is either hard as a rock, or a syrupy mess, 365 days later. Not so romantic then, is it? Would you eat chicken that’s been in the freezer for a year? Uhh, no. How about year-old ice cream? Hardly. But if you wrap it properly, your cake can make it to your first anniversary. Hopefully. Definitely worth a try for those sweet memories.

Note: If it doesn’t work out, get a little cake at your neighbourhood grocery store. After all, it’s the thought that counts.

Groom’s Cake

fruitcake.jpgThe groom’s cake was news to me. I thought that there was one wedding cake: ours. It turns out that the wedding cake is the bride’s, and the groom has a separate cake. So much for starting your life together …together! Already property’s being divided?! Hey! This doesn’t bode well. Well, I read up on this and it’s a southern U.S. tradition that’s been universally adopted. I’m always the last to know.

While the wedding cake or bride’s cake was eaten at the wedding reception, the groom's cake, which was usually a fruitcake, was taken home as a wedding favor (thinly sliced pieces in personalized bags or boxes) for the unmarried female guests to put under their pillows. Supposedly, the women would dream of their future husbands.
Sweet tradition. No pun intended, especially if the groom’s cake is fruitcake.

Let Them Eat Wedding Cake

cake.jpgThere may be nothing sweet about spending months behind bars, but that doesn't change the fact that Martha Stewart sure knows wedding cakes.

A wedding cake symbolizes the abundance of blessings to come in your marriage. No bride and groom are expected to design their own cake, but you can certainly bring ideas to the person who will create a cake for you.

There are so many choices, so look at cake designs until you have a toothache to determine what you love and what you hate. That will help you and your cake creator. And if you think that the wedding cake doesn’t matter, you’re wrong. I don’t have a sweet tooth, and I don’t think that I’ve ever eaten a slice of anyone’s wedding cake, but it’s always one of the most exciting parts of a wedding for me, to finally see the wedding cake they chose.

The wedding cake. Mmmm. As Martha would say, “it’s a good thing.”
