Groom’s Cake

The groom’s cake was news to me. I thought that there was one wedding cake: ours. It turns out that the wedding cake is the bride’s, and the groom has a separate cake. So much for starting your life together …together! Already property’s being divided?! Hey! This doesn’t bode well. Well, I read up on this and it’s a southern U.S. tradition that’s been universally adopted. I’m always the last to know.

While the wedding cake or bride’s cake was eaten at the wedding reception, the groom's cake, which was usually a fruitcake, was taken home as a wedding favor (thinly sliced pieces in personalized bags or boxes) for the unmarried female guests to put under their pillows. Supposedly, the women would dream of their future husbands.

Sweet tradition. No pun intended, especially if the groom’s cake is fruitcake.
