P(r)opping the Question

No, it doesn’t take fancy props to pop the question. But a lot of guys think that just because there’s no elaborate extravaganza, that we’ll say no -- or think that they’re an unimaginative loser. Uh, chances are, guys, that if you’re ready to ask, then we’re ready to say yes. We were probably ready long before you even thought to propose, but don’t get me started on that. In any case, no matter HOW you ask, it’s likely that the answer will be positive. Except in some cases, but we’re not talking about the exceptions.

As reported in an engadget blog item, there’s the geeky way. There’s the sky-writing way -- blech! There’s the ring tied on a bow around a puppy’s neck -- sweet unless she likes the new puppy more than she likes the ring. And let’s not forget the all-too-romantic “Will you marry me?” e-card, which is grounds for divorce before you even get married. I’m ragging on these, but really, there’s no wrong way to ask, and no accoutrements are required.

My guy’s proposal: He came home late from work. Dinner had already been cooking an hour too long. I was in a crappy mood (even before dinner was ruined). He had a shopping bag in one hand, and a chocolate rose in the other. I thought he was just trying to get me out of my funk with that. Then he said, “Can I ask you something?” to which I grunted “yeah, ok, but the rice is crunchy.” He reached into the shopping bag, pulled out a candy ring, and said “Will you marry me?” I was out of my bad mood …instantly. I kept asking him to repeat the question (I loved hearing it!) and then I said “YES!” He reached back into the shopping bag and pulled out a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie celebratory ice cream -- celebratory because he knew I’d say yes.

Point being: No matter how it’s done, every proposal is absolutely perfect. It’s all in the asking, not in the props.
