Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Engaged to be Married!

Yup, they’re engaged. Tying the knot. Gettin’ hitched. Becoming -- officially -- TomKat.

Actor Tom Cruise said he and girlfriend Katie Holmes are engaged, after he popped the question early Friday morning [June 17, 2005] atop the Eiffel Tower.

Finally!!!! Yeah, I know, ‘finally’ is a strange word to use seeing as they’ve only been together for a few months, but I say it because after all this hoopla of will they/won’t they get married, the Candy Shop video, and Tom’s leaps and air-punches on Oprah while talking about Katie, I feel like their relationship has lasted a lifetime already: mine.

Holmes said then that she was embracing Scientology - Cruise's religion. The former star of television's Dawson's Creek grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

Scientology and idol worship. Both are risky business (pun fully intended), but I respect her honesty, and I’ve always liked him. I wish the big-toothed couple the best of luck.
